Abstract
Results obtained in three studies (1999-2000, 2004-2005 and 2013-2014) have been used to determine specifics of key strawberry yield components inheritance and effects of parent cultivars winter hardiness.
A number of cultivars, their progenies from crosses with small-fruited wild species and between each other served as the material.
Specifics of inheritance of characters have been computed as deviations of their average values in progenies from the average values computed of two parent genotypes.
Winter hardiness of the latter had high effects on yield components inheritance.
The winter hardy and high-yielding cultivars Festivalnaya, Feierverk and Alpha passed on to their hybrids big inflorescence quantities, which resulted in decreasing average fruit mass in the progenies.
Insufficient winter hardiness of Rubinovy Kulon led to significant negative deviations of inflorescence counts in its progenies compared with average values of parent cultivars and a compensative increment in fruit mass.
Breeding for yield and large fruit was more efficient when winter hardy genotypes with numerous inflorescences were crossed with cultivars that lost a part of inflorescences during overwintering.
This has given higher chances to select winter hardy seedlings with a beneficial balance of yield components.
