Abstract
Sideritis scardica Griseb. is an endemic species in the Balkan Peninsula.
The plant is found in wild flora in a dry, stony and calcareous soils at altitudes over 1400 m in the Southern Pirin and in Rhopode mountains.
The genus Sideritis comprises more than 150 species, spread around the Mediterranean basin and in the Balkan Peninsula.
In Romania, the species was taken into study after year 2000 by the Breeding and Biodiversity Laboratory, Romania.
The research has been completed so far with the acclimatization and obtaining of the first commercial variety registered in the Official Catalogue of Crop Plant Varieties from Romania under the name ‘Domnesc’, the purpose of this work.
The plant is perennial, herbaceous and the stem is woody at the base.
The plant tends to grow horizontally, the stems bear straight or semi-erect flower, simple or branched.
The plant can reach an average height of 50 cm, and the bush diameter, starting from the second year, can exceed over 60 cm.
The leaves are arranged opposite and bear glandular trichomes, the average length of the leaf has a value of 7.8 cm and the average width has a value of 2.5 cm.
Shoot length varies from 8 to 16 cm, pollination is entomophily and the inflorescence has yellow flowers, with lengths ranging from 6 to 10 cm.
Biochemical analyses on fresh material show that the plant has a volatile oil content of 0.5 mL kg-1, total polyphenols ranged from 2.2 to 4.2% and flavones from 0.7 to 1.1%. The vitamin C recorded the highest value in flowers with 200 mg 100 g-1. The mineral content varied from 260 to 1070 mg 100 g-1 in calcium, to 250-1070 mg 100
g-1 in potassium.
In the year 2019, the Breeding and Biodiversity Laboratory from Vegetable Research Station Buzau, Romania produced their first commercial seed, providing seedlings and seeds available to growers.
