Abstract
During a career of 40 years, the practical dilemmas of fruit breeding were experienced first-hand.
The lessons learned and approaches taken at the hand of practical examples during a long career, reflects how and why these attempts enabled colleagues and me in achieving some success in fruit breeding.
This includes the release of Cheeky® pear and other fruit cultivars.
Cultivation adaptations for various regions, consumer preferences and climate change add to the challenges of pear breeding science.
This discussion will hopefully help new and upcoming breeders in their quest to achieve better and faster breeding successes and serve to encourage future breeders to tackle some of their fruit breeding challenges.
