Efficiency of pear production in different training systems for ‘Rocha’ and ‘Santa Maria’

Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of cultivars ‘Rocha’ and ‘Santa Maria’ planted to different training systems in the plateau region of Santa Catarina, SC – Brazil.
The experimental orchard was planted in August 2014, in São Joaquim, SC city.
The cultivars ‘Rocha’ and ‘Santa Maria’ grafted on BA-29 (Cydonia oblonga) were trained to three systems, namely Tall Spindle with branches bent at an angle of 90 or 45° to the leader, and Bi-axis.
From the first year after planting, the trees were trained according to the requirements of each system.
During the years 2017 to 2020, data on vegetative and reproductive development, as well as fruit production, were collected.
The Bi-axis training system conferred the least vigor in terms of plant height, with 30.7 and 28.2% less compared to the Tall Spindle 45 and 90°, respectively.
The same occurred for the trunk cross-section area, where the Bi-axis system was 30% lower than the 45 and 90° Tall Spindle systems.
For accumulated yield, a higher value was observed for cultivar ‘Santa Maria’ (103.41 t ha‑1) in relation to cultivar ‘Rocha’. In percentage terms, the difference in yield was approximately 41%, corresponding to a gain of US$ 20,500 in the commercial sales value.
As for the training system, lower accumulated yield was observed in the Bi-axis system, with a reduction of 32.6 and 29.3% compared to the Tall Spindle 90° and Tall Spindle 45°, respectively.
This trial indicated that ‘Santa Maria’ is more adaptable to the local cropping system.
