Abstract
In the last 30 years, Romanian pear production declined.
Their sensitivity to pests and diseases, especially pear psylla (Cacopsylla pyricola Förster) and fire blight (Erwinia amylovora Burrill), led to a continuous decrease in orchards.
The pear breeding program at the Research Station for Fruit Growing Voineşti had as its objectives to obtain new cultivars with disease resistance (Venturia pirina, Erwinia amylovora), tolerance to black and white spot (Fabraea maculate, Mycosphaerella sentina), fumagine (Capnodium salicinum) and to Psylla sp.
Extended storage capacity, good fruit appearance, high biological potential, and tree adaptability were other specific objectives.
Six disease-resistant pear cultivars (‘Corina’, ‘Cristal’, ‘Euras’, ‘Orizont’, ‘Romcor’, and ‘Tudor’) from the Voineşti Research Station breeding program in the Experimental Field of the Faculty of Horticulture of Bucharest were evaluated.
Trees grafted on ‘CTS 212’ quince rootstock, on ‘Farold 40’ pear rootstock, and self-rooted, in vitro propagated, were planted at 3.0×0.8 m, for Parallel U and at 3.0×1.6 m, for Trident canopy.
Morphological and biometrical data for each genotype are detailed, besides phenological behavior.
Fruit characteristics like average weight, total soluble solids, dry matter, and acidity are presented.
The studied cultivars and hybrid selections are interesting to be extended to large-scale orchards for their field resistance to main pear diseases, high productivity, and fruit characteristics.
