Abstract
‘Williams‘, the main pear cultivar grown in Serbia, very often requires adequate thinning to reach marketable fruit sizes and to achieve regular yields by preventing alternate bearing.
In two experimental seasons the effect of metamitron as a chemical thinner on yield, fruit quality and return bloom was evaluated.
Metamitron was applied alone at concentrations of 250 and 330 mg L‑1 or at a concentration of 250 mg L‑1 combined with 15 mg L‑1 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) were compared to an untreated control.
All treatments in both seasons reduced the number of fruit per tree compared to the untreated control treatment, but differences were only significant in the treatments without NAA. Yield per tree did not differ among the applied treatments in the first experimental season.
Trees treated with the combination of metamitron and NAA had the highest yield in the second experimental season.
Combined application of metamitron and NAA increased the average fruit weight.
Similar results were obtained with the higher concentration of metamitron in the second season.
Trees treated with metamitron had a higher number of flower clusters in subsequent spring compared to the control.
In the first season, the applied treatments resulted in higher fruit firmness compared to the control.
There were no differences among the treatments in soluble solids concentration.
