Influence of storage conditions on the quality and physiological disorders of the pear cultivar ‘CH201’

Abstract
‘CH201’ is a new bicolor pear cultivar issued from the breeding program of Agroscope, (Switzerland) and in expansion in several European countries.
It has shown promising storage potential and marketability.
Nevertheless, the cultivar has also been found to be susceptible to cavity formation under some CA storage conditions or with 1-MCP treatment.
To evaluate the influence of orchard location and storage conditions on the quality and the occurrence of disorders, storage trials were carried out at the KOB (GER) and Agroscope (CH) research centers in the 2021-22 season.
The influence of i) RA (regular air) and CA regimes with O2 partial pressures ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 kPa and CO2 from 0 to 1 kPa, ii) CA delay (0 and 3 or 4 weeks), iii) 1-MCP treatment (0.15 and 0.30 µL L‑1) were investigated.
Fruit quality was assessed at harvest and after 5 and 7 months storage (at removal and after 7 days shelf life). Fruit origin was identified to play a major role in susceptibility to storage disorders, as great differences were found between the orchards.
While combining low O2 partial pressure of 0.5 kPa combined with 1-MCP (0.15 µL L‑1) did result in the highest fruit firmness and titratable acidity in the Swiss experiments, it increased cavity incidences in one orchard.
Delaying CA for 4 weeks reduced the occurrence of disorders, without negatively affecting fruit quality.
In contrast, in fruit from German orchards, the treatment with 1-MCP (0.30 µL L‑1) improved fruit health in RA storage. 3-week delayed CA storage followed by 1.0 kPa O2 was the best condition for storing ‘CH201’ for 7 months.
Additional 1-MCP application (0.15 µL L‑1) was effective during shelf life, improving quality maintenance without any physiological disorders.
Although a great storage potential could be confirmed for ‘CH201’ pear, storage disorders development remains to be a challenge, highlighting the influence of pre-harvest factors such as fruit origin.
However, a delay in CA establishment was shown to be a reliable strategy in reducing disorder incidence in susceptible fruit.
