Influence of rootstocks on yield, fruit quality and storage potential of ‘CH 201’ pear (Pyrus communis)

Abstract
Rootstocks are determinant for the agronomical performances of fruit trees.
In Europe, quince (Cydonia oblonga) or pear rootstocks (Pyrus communis) are usually used for pear production, according to soil’s characteristics.
In regions with high risks of chlorosis or in some areas with a Mediterranean climate, different Pyrus selections are preconized in order to limit tree decline.
Testing with different rootstocks is particularly crucial for new cultivars whose affinity with commonly recommended quince selections is unknown, which is the case with ‘CH 201’ recently launched in Switzerland and in several European countries.
In this study, we evaluated the influence of six rootstocks (quince – BA29, Adams, EMC, MH, BA29) with interstem Comice and the Pyrus selection Pyriam®) on the precocity of cropping, yield efficiency, fruit quality and storage potential under CA conditions.
After four years of production, Pyriam® showed the highest cumulated yield efficiency with 3.3 kg cm‑2. Among quince rootstocks, Adams showed the best performance with 2.9 kg cm‑2 while the others were between 2.4 to 2.7 kg cm‑2. Dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks were planted at a higher density than Pyriam®. Despite this, Pyriam® showed the best cumulative production in tons.
Quality at harvest and after storage in terms of firmness, total soluble solids and acidity was relatively similar for the tested rootstocks.
However, Pyriam® that induced greater vigour tended to have a higher incidence of CA-related disorders (mainly cavities) after storage than the quince rootstocks.
