Abstract
A field trial of ‘Bosc’ pear trees was planted in 2013 at Cornell University in Geneva, New York USA which compared three in-row spacings (0.9, 1.4 and 1.8 m) × 3.7 m between row spacing) with ‘Bosc’ as the scion cultivar.
At each in-row spacing trees were trained to 3 systems (Tall Spindle, V-trellis and Bi-axis) using 3 rootstocks (OH×F69, OH×F87 and Pyro2-33). After 10 years, trees at 0.9 m spacing were smaller than those at 1.4 and 1.8 m.
The highest yields (t ha‑1) were observed at the 0.9 m spacing followed by the 1.4 m and lowest at the 1.8 m.
Among rootstocks, trees on OH×F69 were. largest followed by OH×F87, and then Pyro2-33. No differences regarding suckers and survival were observed.
Fruit size was largest with Pyro2-33 and smallest with OH×F87. Among training systems, trees trained as Tall Spindle or V-trellis had larger trunks than the individual trunks of those trained as Bi-axis but the summed trunk cross-sectional area of the two axes of the Bi-axis was larger than those of the Tall Spindle or the V-trellis.
Yield and yield efficiency were not significantly different among systems.
Fruit size of the Tall Spindle trees was larger than either the V-trellis or the Bi-axis trees.
There was a significant interaction among spacing, rootstock, and training system and cumulative yield ha‑1. The highest cumulative yields were observed with Tall Spindle or V-trellis on OH×F87 at 0.9 m, followed by Bi-axis on Pyro2-33 at 0.9 m.
The lowest cumulative yields were observed with the OH×F69 at 1.8 m trained as TS or V-trellis.
