Abstract
Rootstocks of different genetic origin have an influence on vigour, yield, phenology and fruit quality of pear trees.
The influence of different rootstocks for pear (Pyrus communis L.) on vigour, productivity and fruit quality was investigated in the fruit growing center Bilje near Nova Gorica (Slovenia) in 12 consecutive years.
Cultivars ‘Williams’, ‘Conference’ and ‘Abate Fetel’ were grafted on rootstocks: ‘Quince MA’, ‘Quince BA 29’, ‘Farold 40’, pear seedling and own-rooted.
The rootstock had a significant effect on the individual tree circumferences, crown volume, number of fruits per tree, yield per tree and per hectare, yield efficiency and also on fruit quality (fruit size, soluble solids content and firmness). Cultivar ‘Williams’ trees on their own-roots were 20% more vigorous than on seedling and had the highest average yield in the first 12 cropping years (29.0 t ha‑1). The average yield of ‘Williams’ cultivar was the lowest on ‘ Quince MA’ (12.1 t ha‑1) rootstock. ‘Abate Fetel’ trees on ‘Farold 40’ rootstock had the highest average yield in the first 12 yielding years (25.3 t ha‑1). The average yield of ‘Abate Fetel’ cultivar was the lowest on ‘Quince MA’ (14.8 t ha‑1) rootstock. ‘Conference’ trees on their own-roots had the highest average yield in the first 12 yielding years (24.4 t ha‑1). The average yield of cultivar ‘Conference’ was the smallest on ‘Quince MA’ (11.7 t ha‑1) rootstock.
