Abstract
The priority objectives in pear breeding programs remain creating cultivars with high-quality fruits and resistance to the main diseases and pests.
In Romania breeding objectives were oriented toward the creation of fire blight resistant cultivars from crossings of Pyrus communis L. with Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai genotypes as a result of fire-blight spreading in the pear plantations after 1991. More than 35 cultivars were registered and were recommended for commercial plantations and also for use as genitors in further breeding crossings.
At Cluj-Napoca Fruit Research Station, numerous cultivars of pear were created, including: ‘Haydeea’, ‘Ina Estival’, ‘Virgiliu Hibernal’, ‘Jubileu 50’, ‘Milenium’, ‘Roşioară de Cluj’, ‘Arvena’, ‘Primadona’. This article presents the behaviour of these new cultivars in the local conditions of the Southern Romania steppe.
Morphological and biometrical data for each genotype are detailed, besides local phenological behaviour.
Fruit characteristics such as average weight, total soluble solids, dry matter, and titratable acidity are presented.
The studied cultivars obtained from Cluj-Napoca FRS provide a useful genetic resource and a diversity of new pear cultivars for future orchard plantings.
