Diversity in the genus Viburnum native to Korea

Abstract
There are more than 150 species of the genus Viburnum L. in the world.
It is mainly distributed in temperate and subtropical regions of Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
Most species are found in East Asia, eastern North America, and the mountainous regions of Mexico and South America.
Most of them are shrubs, small trees and deciduous, but some species are evergreen, and they have many white flowers blooming in spring, so they are also valuable as honey plants.
The genus Viburnum was described by Linnaeus (1753) and was initially classified as a honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae), and then separated into its own family, Viburnaceae by Rafinesque (1820). As a result of recent molecular phylogenetic studies, it has been treated as a member of Adoxaceae (APGII), and more recently changed family name to Viburnaceae (APGIV). It is reported that ten, or 11 Viburnum species according to researchers are distributed in Korean peninsula.
Plants of the genus Viburnum are widely used as ornamentals because of their beautiful flowers, fragrance, and fruits, such as V. carlesii, V. opulus, and as a medicinal source or use, such as V. erosum, V. odoratissimum var. awabuki, V. wrightii and V. dilatatum. Their fruits are edible from the Korean traditional knowledge.
In this study, we will introduce the morphological traits, distribution, native habitat information, life history, and uses of Korean Viburnum and discusses the taxonomic identity of each species.
And also we will suggest Korean Viburnum plants as excellent garden materials.
