Abstract
New cultivars of long-lasting flower azalea whose corolla maintain for about 100 days with flower color change were able to develop.
The long-lasting sepaloid corolla mutation in traditional Japanese azalea cultivars is called misome-shō and the recessive flower trait is caused by loss of function of the MADS-box B class gene: APETALA3 (AP3) homolog.
The breeding program was conducted to create innovative azalea cultivar of long-lasting flowering by adding traits such as larger flower size, hose-in-hose or double flower form and perpetual flowering to misome-shō trait.
Based on flowering and growth characteristics, some of cultivar candidates were selected mainly from the second and later generation of cross-hybrid population.
Ten attractive new cultivars were selected that maintained flowering for 1-3 months compared to the normal flowering period of 1-2 weeks.
Furthermore, each of these cultivars have interesting characteristics in terms of flower color change, flower form mutation, plant growth and flowering season.
As novel evergreen azalea cultivars for garden and potted plants, we have been promoting cultivar registration, cultivation trials and production extension.
