Abstract
Japanese archipelago is located long from south to north, and various climates are recognized in each region.
In addition, the increase of spring temperature shift from south to north, and flowering of the same species occurs earlier in the south. Wisteria floribunda is a liana woody plant belonging to the Fabaceae family and is native to Japan.
People look forward to seeing the flowers throughout Japan, as this species produces beautiful flower racemes in warm spring.
Many cases of global warming affecting the flowering season of ornamental plants have been reported, and it is assumed that Wisteria plants are no exception.
In this study, we investigated the past and present flowering times in various regions of Japan in order to elucidate the flowering phenology of W. floribunda. Data set of phenological observation providing from Japan Meteorological Agency was referred.
Flowering date of a few flowers in an index tree of W. floribunda throughout the Japanese archipelago was recorded as the beginning of flowering, and data sets were compared among 22 data collection sites from 1953 to 2019. Most of observation sites showed early flowering in recent years as compared to the past ones.
Especially since 2000, many sites had blooms earlier than the 66-year median flowering date at that site.
Except for one site, the earliest flowering years are recognized more recently than the latest flowering years.
The linear regression of flowering date between flowering year showed a negative slope at all sites.
From these results, it is suggested that the flowering of W. floribunda has become earlier in recent years.
