Abstract
The wide biological diversity present in Argentina is a great source of variability for new crops, having contributed with a significant number of species in the development of cultivars marketed worldwide.
Nowadays, Nagoya protocol provides a legal framework for the effective implementation of the fair and equitable distribution of the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources.
In the Institute of Floriculture Handroanthus, Tecoma and Passiflora breeding programmes, including germplasm collection, were carried out using classic tools such as intra and interspecific hybridization and the selection of novel genotypes.
Compact plants, that is, with short internodes and branched from the base, abundant blooming and in balance with the foliage were the main desired characteristics.
The cultivars ‘Sorpresa Rosa INTA’ (H. heptaphyllus) and ‘Victoria INTA JICA’ (Tecoma hybr.) were obtained for pot plant use and transferred to farmers.
Also, new cultivars with different flower color are being evaluated.
In Tecoma, female sterile plants were obtained.
In Passiflora, interspecific hybrids were obtained suitable to be use as green curtains.
In this work, the results of the three programs are presented and the perspectives are discussed.
