Abstract
In Shimane Prefecture, hydrangea breeding program was started from 2005, and six cultivars have been bred so far.
Of the six cultivars, ‘Akanegumo’ and ‘Hoshiatsume’ were selected focused on compactness and freely branching.
In this experiment, five of the six cultivars bred in Shimane Prefecture, including ‘Akanegumo’ and ‘Hoshiatsume’, were grown and compared for labor-saving related traits.
In addition, working time for hydrangea production was compared by cultivar.
As a result, the labor-saving cultivars ‘Akanegumo’ and ‘Hoshiatsume’ had more branches and shorter current shoots than the other cultivars.
Especially in ‘Hoshiatsume’, there were many branches including non-flowering shoots and lower plant height than the other cultivars.
Regarding working time, two cultivars required less time to setting of support poles, ‘Akanegumo’ required half the time of the other cultivars, and ‘Hoshiatsume’ did not require any work to set up the support poles.
Based on these results, it is important to labor saving breeding in hydrangea, focus on many lateral branching, short current shoot, and low plant height, and to reduce the working time for setting support poles.
