The mystery of petal blotch formation in rose

Abstract
The molecular mechanisms underlying petal blotch formation in roses remain largely unknown.
Using the hybrid cultivar Rosa ‘Sunset Babylon Eyes’, we discovered that the blotch results from specific accumulation of cyanidin-3,5-O-diglucoside, driven by the coordinated expression of key biosynthetic genes (e.g., F3’H, DFR, ANS) and transcription factors (MYB, WRKY). Our findings reveal the core regulatory network of blotch pigmentation and provide a genetic basis for breeding novel rose cultivars with unique color patterns.
