Rose culture in agroecological systems: organic fertilizing and intercropping with medicinal plants

Abstract
Agroecological system-based rose culture delivers several advantages over traditional methods, notably because it enables other uses beyond the ornamental, such as the production of food, medicine, or cosmetics.
Therefore, the goal of this project was to pinpoint the efficiencies of intercropping roses and medicinal plants and Bokashi fertilization, in conditions based on agroecological parameters.
The experiment was performed in the field with 8 treatments resulting from a 4×2 factorial, in which roses were planted in open-air seedbeds with or without intercropping with the medicinal plants Mentha × rotundifolia, Mentha piperita, or Mentha arvensis var. piperacens, and fertilized or not with Bokashi at a dose of 30 g plant‑1. The experimental design was randomized blocks with 4 replications and 4 plants per plot.
We observed a reduction in weed incidence when we intercropped roses, and the medicinal plants studied.
Among them, Mentha arvensis var. piperacens intercropping did not negatively affect rose quality and produced more flowers (17) than the control (10). We concluded that besides a more diversified productive system, the intercropping of roses and medicinal plants provides ground shading, which reduces the need for weed control, does not negatively affect flower production or quality, and that the species Mentha arvensis var. piperacens is the most recommended to that end.
