Abstract
Flower color is a pivotal ornamental trait in roses.
This study aimed to establish a quantitative, phenotype-based classification system for rose flower colors.
The petal colors of 207 rose cultivars were measured using a chroma meter (NF555) to obtain CIELAB (L, a, b*) values.
Cluster analysis was performed to group the colors, and the ISCC-NBS color nomenclature system was employed for precise color naming and classification.
The results categorized the rose cultivars into seven distinct color groups: white, yellow-green, blue-purple, red, orange, pink, and yellow.
This study demonstrates that integrating cluster analysis with the ISCC-NBS system provides a more scientific and accurate method for flower color classification than using either method alone.
The established quantitative classification framework offers a valuable tool for cultivar identification and supports targeted breeding programs for novel flower colors.
