Abstract
Color is a critical indicator for assessing the maturity and quality of rosehips; however, traditional visual and colorimetric methods are highly subjective.
Therefore, there is a need to establish a more scientific and objective color classification system for rosehips.
In this study, 15 cultivars of rosehips from Xinjiang and Yunnan, China, were used as experimental materials.
The color phenotypic parameters (L*, a*, b*, C*, h°) of the fruits were measured using a colorimeter.
The color index for red grapes (CIRGs) was calculated for each fruit, and classification was performed using cluster analysis.
The results showed that color parameters differed to some degree among the rosehip cultivars.
The average CIRG value was 1.83, ranging from 0.83 to 3.42, indicating that rosehips at the mature stage generally exhibit a red hue.
Correlation analysis revealed that C* value was significantly positively correlated with the L* and b* values (P≤0.001), whereas the CIRG value was significantly negatively correlated with the L*, b*, C*, and values (P≤0.001). Based on the CIELab color system and CIRG values, cluster analysis classified the rosehips into three color series: reddish-brown, red, and orange.
This study establishes a color classification system for rosehips, providing a reference for defining and classifying fruit coloration in the genus Rosa.
