The success of hybridization in hybrid tea rose × old garden rose combinations

Abstract
Selecting highly fertile parents and identifying the most compatible cross combinations are crucial for improving breeding program success and increasing the likelihood of developing new rose cultivars.
In this study, eight Rosa × hybrida cultivars were used as seed parents, and three old garden rose species (R. damascena Mill., R. centifolia L., and R. odorata ‘Louis XIV’) as pollen parents.
Cross-pollination was conducted in a controlled environment to assess parental fertility and determine successful combinations.
Data were collected on parental ploidy level and pollen quality, as well as seed production efficiency, fruit set rate, seed formation, germination rate, and compatibility index of the cross combinations.
Furthermore, a comprehensive fertility index was calculated, and data were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). Results showed that all genotypes were tetraploid.
The fruit set rate of combinations ranged from 11.32 to 81.25%, seed production efficiency varied between 0 and 4.23%, and the compatibility index ranged from 0.82 to 21.25%. According to PCA results and comprehensive fertility indices, the ‘Layla’ × R. odorata ‘Louis XIV’, ‘Magnum’ × R. odorata ‘Louis XIV’, and ‘First Red’ × R. odorata ‘Louis XIV’ combinations exhibited superior performance. R. odorata ‘Louis XIV’ was the most effective pollen parent, whereas ‘Layla’, ‘Magnum’, and ‘Avalanche’ were the best-performing seed parents.
The fertility of the seed parent had a greater impact on the overall combination fertility.
An increase in pollen germination rate was associated with a higher success rate in compatible combinations.
While old garden roses can contribute to breeding success as parental candidates, it is essential to assess their ability to transmit traits that influence consumer preferences.
