Abstract
The recessive gene s for spinelessness, from a red raspberry, has been transferred into a black raspberry which was used in further crossing with red raspberry to produce a new diploid spine-free purple raspberry (cv.
Glencoe) from SCRI. Tetraploid purple raspberries, obtained by colchicine treatment of germinating seedlings, have larger fruit and better fruit set than diploids in cold conditions at flowering.
