Abstract
Two trials of ‘Oregon Thornless Evergreen’ blackberry (Rubus laciniatus WILLD.) produced through tissue culture have been established in hopes of identifying a genetically thornless clone as productive as the chimerally thornless Oregon standard.
In a replicated planting, nine potentially-thornless compact clones were compared with Illinois tissue-cultured standards and Oregon vegetatively propagated standards.
Illinois and Oregon standards performed comparably.
The most productive of the nine potentially thornless compact clones was comparable to the standards, but produced a partially thorny cane.
The type and extent of thorny regrowth will be evaluated in 1989. In a screening trial of 91 clones selected from 1300 bent-petiole plantlets, 43 performed well in the first year.
All 91 will be evaluated for productivity and thornlessness in 1989.
