Abstract
Germplasm enhancement is a major consideration in the British Columbia (B.C.) red raspberry breeding program.
The next cultivars to be released will have genes of the black raspberry, Rubus occidentalis, in their derivations.
It is likely that future cultivars will have one or more of several other species in their derivations.
These include R. crataegifolius, R. cockburnianus, R. spectabilis, R. arcticus, R. odoratus, and previously unexploited selections of the two R. idaeus subspecies, R. i. vulgatus and R. i. strigosus.
The last named is now receiving particular emphasis in the program and is the major focus of this paper.
