Abstract
Raspberry breeding in Norway was formally organized in 1983 with the Kvithamar Research Station assuming responsibility for the program.
The program has benefited by continuing the breeding started in the Njøs Research Station and that started at the Agricultural University of Norway.
The early fruiting cultivar ‘Vene’ and the hardy cultivar ‘Balder’ were released from these programs.
New crosses have been made each year from 1985 to 1989. Parents have been Norwegian cultivars and advanced selections and various cultivars and selections from foreign programs.
Crosses in 1986 were made in conjunction with the British Columbia breeding program at the Vancouver Research Station.
Progress is being made in the Norwegian program with respect to winter hardiness and early ripening.
There is need for improved fruit firmness, ease of harvest and higher yields.
