CANE VIGOUR CONTROL IN RED RASPBERRIES WITH GLUFOSINATE-AMMONIUM

Abstract
Cane vigour control and the biennal cropping system are known to have many advantages in red raspberry plantations.
In both systems it is necessary to remove the young canes with a herbicide, which must not harm the fruiting canes nor the second flush of young canes.
The most effective chemical for this purpose was dinoseb-in-oil, which is no longer available.
Therefore other compounds had to be found and tested.
Among different chemicals, for example paraquat, deiquat and a liquid cyanamide (Alzodef), only glufosinate-ammonium has turned out to be suitable for this purpose.

Trials carried out in the raspberry cultivars Schönemann and Zefa 2 have shown that 1.0 kg a.i./ha glufosinate-ammonium which was applied as a tank mixture together with 10 kg/ha ammonium sulfate gave good results, being as effective as dinoseb-in-oil.
Even if the laterals are sprayed with glufosinate-ammonium no harm is done to the fruiting canes.
The pure chemical without the surfactant was not as effective.
At present little is known on the side effects of glufosinate-ammonium on yield and also little is known about phytosanitary problems.
