Abstract
Local cvs of pears, grafted onto Crataegus seedlings, produce russetted and severely splitted fruits.
Trees show very low annual growth and deficient foliation, with frequent twig -dieback ; leaves with reddish blades and weavy appearance.
Plantations show accelerated trees ageing.
Trunks of some older trees presented a black ring at the grafting point.
Soil of volcanic origin (andosols) is low or normal in N, P, Mn and Zn.
Leaf nutrient status was low or deficient in N, P, Mn and Zn.
The splitted fruits showed lower Na, Cu and higher Ca, Fe, B concentrations in the pulp as well as lower Cu and higher N, K, Mg, Fe concentrations in the epidermis (trends). The integral trees treatment with Citrolina (primaveral dormant spray), foliar monthly fertilization (N, P, B, Mn, Zn-salts) and Terramycin trunk injection resulted in substantial improvement in tree growth and fruit quality.
