Abstract
Generally the knowledge and understanding of farmers’ practices in pesticide application is very global.
This paper presents a method which leads to an improved description of the practices concerned.
The system is illustrated with the results of an implementation in shallots in the Brebes’ district, Central Java.
In contrast with current ideas, the shallot growers in Brebes do adjust their pesticide application to the pest/disease situation in the field.
Throughout the year they preventively apply cheap insecticides and fungicides.
This preventive mixture is supplemented with curative, more expensive insecticides or fungicides when pest pressure respectively disease pressure increases.
