Abstract
Between 1961 and 1990, the transactions between vegetable growers and processors in France were organised on the basis of contracts negotiated at national level by representatives of the growers and processors (the Interprofession). This paper describes the changes that are presently taking place in this type of agribusiness centralized organisation and examines the economic determining factors by analysing the sources of uncertainty.
It shows that a decentralized contractual economy is emerging which is having difficulty reconciling industrial coordination and marketing coordination.
