Abstract
This article describes part of the results of a research project aimed at a Decision Support System (DSS) for space allocation planning in pot-plant nurseries.
For visual support during the planning process a graphical user-interface has been developed.
This enables the grower to design a space allocation plan all by himself.
Due to the complexity of the problem, research is now aimed at mathematical support of the planning process.
For this purpose a new heuristic technique, called the Genetic Algorithm (GA), has been applied.
A general description of the technique is given, followed by some alternative methods to code the space allocation problem for a GA. The first results of some simple experiments seem promising, but further research is still needed.
