Abstract
Banana consumption in the Federal Republic of Germany increased considerably after 1983. Until now, imports are tariff free and not restricted.
The introduction of an EC-marketing order after 1992 is thus likely to have a severe impact on the German fruit market.
Using time series of household expenditure data, the main determinants of banana consumption in Germany are analyzed.
Following a brief review of present market policies, possible effects of a new EC-market regime on the German fruit markets are discussed.
A price increase of 20 % is viewed as a conservative estimate.
This would translate into a reduction of banana consumption in Germany of approx. 250 000 t.
A substantial part of this quantity would be substituted by other fruits.
