“POLLIZO” PLUM, A ROOTSTOCK FOR ALMOND: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
This population belongs to the Saint Julian group and graft compatibility with the stone fruit species is considered good in its area of origin.
Previous experiences have shown that graft compatibility of almond varieties on "pollizo" rootstocks is satisfactory, especially when virus tested materials are assayed.
This makes feasible the utilization of "pollizo" as a rootstock for almond when the soil conditions are not recommended for peach and almond x peach rootstocks.
‘Montizo’ and ‘Monpol’ are two recently released "pollizo" clones requiring their evaluation as almond rootstocks. as compared to other commonly used plum rootstocks.
Thus a trial was planted in 1989 using ‘Guara’ almond as a scion on this two "pollizos", ‘Saint Julian A (EM)’ and ‘INRA Saint Julien 655/2’. Growth measurements after the 3th and 4th years show that so far only small differences have been induced by the different rootstocks.
