Abstract
A lot of insects live on Almond in Sicily, but only a few really injury the cultivations; among the latter ones, some species of Rhynchota and a species of Coleoptera are to be mentioned. Monosteira unicostata (Mulsant & Rey) (Heteroptera Tingididae) performs three generations per year, overwintering in the adult stage; it is the most important pest in Southern Italy, particularly for cv "Tuono" and "Nanpareil", while the Sicilian cv "Pizzuta d’Avola" shows a lower susceptibility.
The aphids (Homoptera Aphidoidea) Hyalopterus amygdali (Blanchard) and Brachycaudus amygdalinus (Schouteden) are also of economic importance, in relation to the high infestation levels that they can reach during spring, especially on early cvs "Pizzuta d’Avola", "Bottara" and "Sierra". Among Coleoptera, a lot of species feed on Prunus dulcis, but only Capnodes tenebrionis L. (Coleoptera, Buprestidae) is really noxious and its larvae can rapidly suppress the infested almond trees; moreover its chemical control is very difficult.
