BEHAVIOUR OF SOME SELF-FERTILE ALMOND SELECTIONS IN THE SOUTHEAST OF FRANCE
An experimentation network was developed after the 1985 GREMPA conference to study the new self-pollinating almond selections.
For most of them, self-fertility alleles were transferred from ‘Tuono’ or from other cultivars from the Apulia region.
Twenty four self-fertile varieties from four research stations have been studied at the INRA-Avignon station.
They were planted in winter 1987 at the Domaine des Garrigues, near Nimes in the South of France.
Tree vigor, date of flowering and density of productivity were observed from 1989 to 1993, while fruit traits and production were observed only in 1992.
Two hybrids from the crossing "Ferralyse x Tuono" and the ‘Lauranne’ and ‘Steliette’ cultivars have the best performance for production and kernel quality.
The best hybrid has a yield of 1.1 t kernels/ha.
Observations made on a monovarietal orchard of ‘Lauranne’ established in winter 1986 in Avignon and on a other 1 year-older orchard, confirm these results.
The yield was for the first orchard,3 Kg kernels/tree in 1991 and 2.3 Kg kernels/tree in 1992, and 4.83 Kg Kernels for the second in 1992.
