Abstract
Deciduous fruit species normally require pollination and fertilization for fruit set.
In a literature review the general aspects of these phenomena are discussed: The transfer of pollen, the importance of its quality and storage, the histological structure of stigma and style, pollen germination and tube growth, incompatibilities and the effective pollination period (EPP). In addition the process of fertilization is described, as well as the very first stages of seed development, which are necessary for fruit set and growth.
Of great importance is flower quality, which affects fruit set considerably.
Concluding still open questions are mentioned and possible research for the future is outlined.
