INHERITANCE OF SELF-FERTILITY IN SWEET CHERRIES (FROM STELLA CULTIVAR) AND PRODUCTIVITY OF SEEDLINGS

Abstract
From 1985 to 1994 efficiency of autogamy as well as flowering abundancy and fruit set were evaluated using 165 seedlings from 7 parental combinations derived from crosses with cv.
Stella.
Self-fertile seedlings segregated in shares from 40 to 69% in progenies of cultivars which carry the S3 allele of incompatibility.
In 2 progenies, which did not carry S3, these shares were 13 and 28%. All seedlings were self-sterile, however, if cv.
Stella was used as mother parent.
These findings suggest that self-fertility of Stella is controlled by extra-nuclear inheritance probably carried by plastids.
The original mutation in the S4 allele could be induced as a mutation of the heteroplazmon type, which could explain the variability in the segregation of self-fertility that was found even with a linkage to S alleles.
After open pollination the self-fertile seedlings were 5–10% more productive than the self-sterile seedlings.
This result however, was found under a almost ideal distribution of pollinizers and an abundance of bees.
