Abstract
Since 1985, Belgium’s State Plant Pathology Station has re-introduced 9 old apple cultivars into the nursery trade.
They are labelled as ‘RGF’ cultivars, an acronym for ‘Ressources Génétiques Fruitières’. The 9 cultivars were selected after a 10-years evaluation for partial disease resistance to the most important apple diseases and for other desirable agronomic characters.
To assess the cross-pollination potential of these cultivars, studies of their flowering period, intercompatibility, and use as pollinizers for apple cv.
Golden Delicious were undertaken.
A preliminary study comparing the mean number of good seeds in the selected cultivars with the mean number in diploid and triploid cultivars showed that the RGF cvs Godivert, Joseph Musch, Gris Braibant and Cwastresse Double seem to be triploid and therefore would be poor pollinizers.
Controlled crossings made over 1–3 years showed that the RGF cvs Président Roulin, Grenadier, Radoux and La Paix always produced a good fruit set when used as pollinizers.
The results of crossings during one season indicated that these four cultivars are good pollinizers for Golden Delicious, with the best pollinizer being Président Roulin.
