Abstract
Between 1982 and 1989 we examined flowering of 63 European plum cultivars, at 6 sites with different characters.
The time, progress and duration of flowering were mainly affected by air temperature.

A daily mean temperature below 10°C resulted in a viability period of stigmas of 3 to 5 days against 1 to 2 days above 13°C. Anthers opened slowly below 14°C, and quickly above 20°C. The intensity of anther dehiscence was much more sensitive to a change in temperature than the duration of stigma viability.

We have divided the plum cultivars into 3 groups according to the length of flowering: short (less than 8 days), medium (8 to 11 days), and long (more than 11 days). According to the time of bloom, 5 groups have been formed: early, medium early, medium, medium late, late.
The flowering periods of cultivars in the same group or in adjacent groups have overlap to a great extent.
