EFFECT OF LOW TEMPERATURES ON POLLEN PRODUCTION AND GERMINATION IN STRAWBERRY

In experiments conducted in growth chamber on cultivar Chandler, 8 days at 8°C or 10°C at the flowering stage induced a temporary lack of pollen about 3 weeks after the end of the cold treatment.
Cytological observations have indicated that the main disturbance occured at a precise stage, near tetrad formation.

A rather long period of low diurnal temperature is necessary, and a cold treatment of 3 days had no effect.
A temporary warming of 2 hours during the cold treatment did not prevent the deleterious effect of cold temperature, but increased it.
Decreasing production of pollen was also observed under field conditions after a period of several days with temperature between 5°C and 14°C.

A bad effect of low temperature (below 16°C) was also observed on pollen germination.
