RELATION OF MEMBRANE LIPID CONTENT IN STRAWBERRY ROOTS TO RED STELE (PHYTOPHTHORA FRAGARIAE) RESISTANCE

Abstract
The content and composition of lipids in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) roots in relation to their resistance to infection by isolates of Phytophthora fragariae were determined.
The composition and contents of cerebrosides (CB), free sterols (FS), total membrane sterols (TMS; acylated steryl glycoside + steryl glycoside + free sterol), the ratios of CB: phospholipids (PL), FS : PL, TMS : PL and the degree of fatty acid unsaturation were significantly different between resistant and susceptible cultivars.
Roots from resistant plants had less CB, but more FS and TMS than those from susceptible plants.
-sitosterol was the major sterol in the roots of strawberry plants.
Resistant cultivars have higher ratios of FS to PL and TMS to PL, and a lower ratio of CB to PL than susceptible cultivars.
The major phospholipids in strawberry roots were phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylinositol (PI). The predominant fatty acids in the phospholipids were palmitic (16:0), linoleic (18:2) and linolenic acid (18:3). The degree of fatty acid unsaturation was higher in susceptible plants than in resistant plants.
Lipid variations of cell membranes may contribute to differences in red stele resistance of strawberry roots.
