CULTIVAR TRIALS WITH EVERBEARING STRAWBERRIES IN THE NETHERLANDS

The main standard everbearing cultivar in The Netherlands (Rapella) lacks fruit firmness.
Furthermore, fruits often are somewhat irregular in shape.
Fruits of the second most commonly grown everbearing cultivar, Selva, are even firmer than those of Elsanta, but also have very poor flavour.
Also, productivity of ‘Selva’ is only moderate.

In cultivar trials over the past 3 years, several new selections and cultivars were tested.
Some were very promising.
The best results were from the English cultivar Evita with a high yield of reasonably firm fruits with a very nice bright colour, a very good fruit shape and size, and a reasonably good flavour.
Moreover, ‘Evita’ seems to be resistant to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis f. sp. fragariae) on the leaves but, however, rather susceptible to powdery mildew on the fruits.
