INFLUENCE OF CULTIVAR AND KIND OF RUNNER PLANTS ON THE YIELD OF GREENHOUSE-GROWN STRAWBERRIES IN CONTAINERS

Strawberries were grown from March to the first decade of June in 3 (1994) and 4 (1995) year old substrate (peat-bark mixture) previously used for sweet peppers (1992–1993). The substrate was placed in large polypropylene bags (60 x 90 cm).

In 1994, ‘Elsanta’ – frigo plants A+ (>15 mm) yielded more than ‘Kent’ – frigo plants A (10–12 mm). The runners used in this experiment were lifted from the open and then cold stored at -2°C prior to planting.

In 1995, runner plants A (10–12 mm) of ‘Syriusz’ yielded more than comparable ones of ‘Kent’. The runners were produced in a high unheated tunnel.
Half of them were lifted at the end of November 1994, and stored at -2°C until the beginning of March 1995. The remaining runners (wintered in a tunnel) were lifted at the turn of February and March 1995. The plants from runners wintered in a tunnel produced a higher yield (by 25%) than the frigo plants.
