Abstract
Plants were regenerated from calli originating from double stained fused protoplasts of Fragaria x ananassa and F. vesca selected by sorting in a flow cytometer.
Most of the plants had a DNA content that exceeded the octoploid strawberry.
Protoplasts of F. x ananassa resistant to hygromycin were fused to protoplasts of F. x ananassa resistant to kanamycin.
One callus selected on MS medium with 50 μg/L of hygromycin and kanamycin, respectively, gave rise to plantlets.
Plants regenerated from calli in a fusion experiment between Fragaria x ananassa and F. vesca protoplasts were screened.
Plants that deviated morphologically from the parents were tested.
These plantlets all had more than 56 chromosomes, the basic number for strawberry.
The increased ploidy level could be due to somaclonal variation or somatic hybridization.
The analysis of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) is in progress to determine the origin of the DNA in the suspected somatic hybrids.
