EFFECT OF SOWING DATES ON THE MATURITY AND YIELDS OF SINGLE HARVEST TOMATO

In the lowlands of the North-Eastern region of Yugoslavia direct sowing of tomato crops for the single harvest gives the best results when it is performed in the interval between the beginning and the end of April.
Later plantings, under the effect of unfavorable ecological conditions have responded with reduced total yield and higher percentage of green fruits.

The combination of the planting schedule and choice of varieties with different vegetation periods are indispensable to extend the harvest period and the rythmical supply of the processing industry.

Early varieties ("New Yorker") sown at the beginning of April are ripe for harvest about 15 August, which means 120 days after sowing.
In later plantings the period from emergence to harvest is 7 – 10 days shorter.
The harvest season may last until the end of September which is sufficient for the ecological utilization of the mechanical equipment for tomato harvesting.
