Abstract
The methods of onion growing depend upon the biological characteristics of varieties, soil and climatic conditions of the region, and often on the tradition of the grower.
In Yugoslavia, and particularly in Serbia, the onion is mostly grown through sets (85–90%). With consideration that this method of production will be for a longer period still the leading method, in the Vegetable Research Institute at Smederevska Palanka a comprehensive research programme is under course with the aim to determine the most favourable agrocomplex for the production of onions through sets.
In this paper we are presenting the results of examinations which are dealing with the possibility to shift the planting from spring time to autumn and to determine the optimum size of sets for the most spread varieties in the production.
