IMPORTANCE OF THE TYPE OF SEX EXPRESSION AND OF HYBRIDITY OF CUCUMBERS FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF SUPPLYING THE CANNING INDUSTRY IN HUNGARY
Several lines, varieties and hybrids of different sex expression have been observed for fruiting concentration, and total yield at different planting dates.
Results of this experiment showed that the traditional monoecious varieties were out yielded by genoecious lines developed in Hungary and by hybrids of different origin.
In total yield a surplus of 37 and 43 per cent respectively was harvested, whereas in the early period 47–48 per cent was gained, by the use of genoecious forms.
A further achievement above the mean of gynoecious forms was represented by some particular Hungarian and foreign hybrid combinations.
A productive and qualified constant variety, the ‘Hokus’ was surpassed by 2–6 times in yield on the 60th day after planting, moreover some hybrids conserved their leading position in total yield as well.
Gynoecious hybrids and varieties in an adequate combination may facilitate the extension and a more even distribution of harvest as well as of processing, consequently a better exploitation of the capacities.
