Abstract
During a 3 year period we have investigated the effect of the size of sets on the dynamics of growth, formation and maturity of bulb, as well as on the yield and quality of onion.
On the basis of the results obtained the following conclusions can be drawn:

The highest daily increase of the weight have plants produced from the biggest sets, especially of the variety Ptujski.

Using big sets the dependence of bulb weight upon plant age decreases (r=0.98 to r=0.84), as well as the dependence of leaves weight (r=0.82 to r=0.71).

When using big sets the bulb is being formed 10 days earlier but the amount of out of standard bulbs increases from 10 to 15%. The yield of the standard bulbs increases only for 5% in the variety Zitavski Zuti and for 48% in the variety Ptujski.

The size of sets did not affect the content of dry matter but in the variety Zitavski Zuti which is characterized by slow intensity of growth, it increased the content of total sugars for 25%, sucrose for 34% and ascorbic acid for 9%. In the variety Ptujski which has an intensive increase of the growth, the size of sets had no essential effect on the biochemical characteristics of bulb.
