Abstract
The tomato is the most important protected crop in England and Wales and is at present under considerable economic pressure due to escalating fuel costs.

ADAS Eastern Region have introduced a simple mail-in, mail-out costing service which enables the grower to monitor output and fuel costs for each individual block of tomatoes.

At the end of the season a summary of each glasshouse block is provided.

The grower is able to compare his results with the aggregated results of other holdings.
The service is particularly valuable when linked to a grower discussion group.

Armed with the history and results of the crop the Horticultural Advisory Officer is in a stronger position to give positive advice to participants.
