Abstract
This study is a part of a bigger research on consumption models of fruit and vegetables in Poland for different stages of socio-economic development.
In that study major changes are presented which occurred before and occur now in the consumption and expenditure on fruit and vegetables in Poland and in some other countries of a similar climate but of a higher degree of economic development.

Results of this research were confronted with patterns of fruit and vegetables consumption elaborated for Polish conditions by human nutrition experts.
Nutritionists established as optimum yearly consumption per inhabitant about 200 kg of vegetables and about 50 kg fruit.
A confrontation of long-term and actual changes in consumption of fruit and vegetables with theoretical calculations of nutritionists is necessary because consumption models have to fulfill two basic conditions: they have to be favourable for the society, and realistic.
A great discrepancy was stated between consumption patterns and the actual level and trends of consumption of vegetables and fruit.
