Abstract
The vegetative propagation improvement has been approached by several technological or physiological means : control of environmental conditions, selection of plant material, in vitro culture methods… A genetical pathway could also be used.
To test this possibility; some experiments have been performed with a species from which it is easy to obtain pure lines :the tomato. Two parental lines have been studied (Apedice and Porphyre) and their reciprocal hybrids.

The main results of this investigations are:

  1. The two lines and their hybrids have different capacities for budding in vitro.
These capacities are dependent on growth regulators and cultured organs.

  2. When hypocotyl is chosen as material, one of the parental lines has always a larger possibility for budding.
This ability is maternally transmitted to one of the hybrids and an heterosis effect is noticed with particular growth regulators balance.

  3. With regard to number of buds by explant, the relative position of the parents and hybrids fluctuates in connection with the organ cultured in vitro (hypocotyle, cotyledon or leave).

In conclusion, among other factors, such a maternal effect should particularly be taken into account for a general strategy of vegetative propagation improvement.
